The Citizens United decision of 2010 has been said to be one of the greatest threats to the democratic process in the U.S. across the history of the nation. A political action committee was established in 2015, End Citizens United with the explicit goal of overturning the Supreme Court decision and eliminating big money from U.S. politics once and for all.
As part of the buildup to the 2018 Midterm Elections, End Citizens United has made the decision to announce a list of its top 20 targets of the PAC for their use of donations from major political donors; The Los Angeles Times reports the list includes four high-profile Californian politicians who come from the Republican side of the political spectrum. The four Californian Republicans targeted by End Citizens United are Mimi Walters, Dana Rohrabacher, Darrell Issa, and Duncan Hunter.
End Citizens United has become a major success in terms of fundraising for many different groups and political candidates who share the views on campaign financing of the PAC with the successful end to 2017 for Democrat candidates seen as being in part a success for the PAC. By the end of 2017 End Citizens United was reporting it had already raised more than $11 million of a targeted $35 million needed to fight on behalf of campaign financing reform candidates during the 2018 Midterm elections, and End Citizens United’s lacrosse camp.
Discussing the four targeted politicians from California, End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller explained the Republicans were not only the most vulnerable to defeat but also showed the dark side of campaign financing. House Representative Hunter of the Alpine district is currently under investigation for the misuse of campaign funds which is a part of the issue for Muller and her fellow members of the PAC, and follow their Twitter.
The work being completed by End Citizens United is designed to raise awareness to the ongoing problems of major political donors taking advantage of the lack of regulation currently in place for major campaign financing. To maintain its political and financial independence, End Citizens United is working as a traditional PAC which means the group limits the donations of members and donors to just $5,000 to make sure no individual donor has the ability to guide the future of the PAC for their own individual gain. When discussing the political ideology of the PAC, Tiffany Muller explained her belief Democrats shared a common philosophy about bringing an end to the Citizens United decision and would be backed because of this support.
